5 Years Later: 5 Business Impacts of Brexit

Five years after the United Kingdom left the European Union, small businesses across the country are still feeling the effects.

Who are the most powerful women with kids in business in the UK?

Whilst some women delay having children in pursuit of their career dreams, for others a family has not held them back from flying high in the workplace. Here in the UK we have many powerful women in the world of business, who juggle a career with family life.

In fact, a recent Forbes list of the most powerful women revealed that the highest-achieving women are mums to on average two children. To celebrate International Women's Day on Sunday 8th March and Mother’s Day, we take a look at some of the leading female business figures who are also mums.

Karren Brady

Karren Brady is a businesswoman, baroness and star of The Apprentice, a popular TV show. Karen is known as one of the UK’s most powerful business brains, providing expert advice to the government and acting as Lord Sugar’s aide. Karen admits that it has been difficult to maintain a work life balance, especially when she returned to work just days after her daughter was born. However, she is keen to emphasise that this was over 20 years ago and today there is much more support for mums to juggle motherhood with a successful career.

Michelle Mone

Michelle is known as the down-to-earth owner of Ultimo, a leading lingerie brand. Michelle is mum to three children and successfully juggles office hours with her home life. The business began in 1996, today the business has a multi-million-pound turnover and is one of the key players in the global lingerie market. After leaving school at 15 without formal qualifications, Helen was determined to fulfil her big ambitions and is proof that if you have a dream, it is possible to turn it into reality.

Anita Roddick

Dame Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop is a great example of a mum who was able to start a hugely successful business, whilst being a mum. Sadly, Anita died at the age of just 64, but in an amazing gesture she donated her vast wealth to campaigns relating to climate issues, human rights and debt in the third world. The business started as a single shop and it was sold for £625million in 2005.

Jacqueline Gold

Jacqueline Gold is the owner of Ann Summers, a business which has spanned her 33-year career. The business caused waves when it started in 1981, resulting in Jacqueline being taken to court numerous times. Today, the Ann Summers business is a household name and Jacqueline attributes her success down to a willingness to push boundaries. With a daughter herself, she aims to prove that women can be anything they want to be and runs a popular chat group via Twitter which promotes other female entrepreneurs.

Hilary Devey

Hilary Devey is a mum, hugely successful businesswoman with a career in logistics and TV. Hillary believes that mums can thrive in the workplace, as long as they show a commitment and dedication. Hilary is a great role model for anyone thinking of starting a business and believed so much in her business idea, that she sold her house and car to raise the funds. Although this is an extreme and risky way of raising funds for a business venture, the risk paid off for Hilary.
